Data Science Innovation At the Intersection of Biomedical Research and the Library

Conference in Bethesda MD, June 13-14, 2018

The Friends of the National Library of Medicine (FNLM), The NIH National Library of Medicine (NLM) concluded their 2018 conference: “Data Science Innovation at the Intersection of Biomedical Research and the Library.”Biomedical research is increasingly data intensive and intertwined with data science. As the largest provider of digital information services used by scientists, health professionals and members of the public worldwide, the NLM’s role is ever more critical to the future of biomedical research. NLM’s concept of “a push library” is one that proactively engages, breaks new ground and redefines its role in the 21st century.

This conference brought key stakeholders including researchers, government, industry, publishers and health care consumer representatives, together to provide a forum for presentations and discussions around: supporting data sharing, the changing role of journals and peer review, use of “FAIR” (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data sets, trends in mining big data to yield knowledge, opportunities for trans-NIH data science activities, and more. The constructive and practical outcomes will benefit producers as well as users of scientific discoveries.

The Conference took place in the NIH NLM Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications on June 13-14, 2018.

Dr. Brennan Publicly Sworn in as NLM Director

On September 12, Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, raised her right hand and became the first nurse and first woman to be sworn in as director of the 180-year-old U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Hundreds gathered in person with hundreds more tuned in online to witness the historic occasion that NIH Director Francis Collins, MD, called a “great day for NIH.” Deputy Director and former Acting Director of NLM Betsy Humphreys called Dr. Brennan the right choice at the right time.

Dr. Brennan, a nurse and an industrial engineer, joined the Library from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was the Lillian S. Moehlman-Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine is the largest biomedical library in the world. The Library is dedicated to accelerating scientific discovery, delivering information, and improving health. The Library is supported and promoted by the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, which publishes NIH MedlinePlus magazine.
