The Friends of the National Library of Medicine are pleased to announce the launch of FNLM In Focus: Conversations in Health and Science, a new podcast series featuring in-depth discussions with leading voices in medicine, research, and public health.

Each episode explores breakthroughs, historical perspectives, and the evolving role of medical knowledge in our lives, offering thoughtful context for anyone interested in how knowledge shapes care and society.

Our inaugural episode features a wide-ranging discussion with journalist Gary Taubes, bestselling author of The Case Against Sugar and The Case for Keto.  Taubes and FNLM’s Dr. George Lundberg explore the history of American dietary habits and how decades of nutrition science, public health policy, and messaging have shaped today’s national conversation — including the White House’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.

The conversation sets the tone for this series: rigorous, accessible, and grounded in evidence.

Coming next, we are honored to feature Robert Lefkowitz, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in a conversation about the integrity and quality of scientific research. Dr. Lefkowitz reflects on how he ensured his discoveries were sound and reproducible, how he confronted contradictory or misleading findings, and how he safeguarded his work against error. He shares candid insights into the discipline required to distinguish true discovery from misunderstanding — and the responsibility researchers bear in protecting the scientific record.

Episodes are available through the FNLM.org podcasts page, on Spotify, and wherever you stream your favorite podcasts.
