This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Newbold’s exceptional contributions to the field of nursing informatics, her leadership in integrating technology into nursing practice, and her dedication to advancing healthcare through education and innovation.
Dr. Newbold, based in Franklin, Tennessee, has been a pioneering force in nursing informatics. Her work has helped shape the discipline, broaden its impact on patient care, and inspire the next generation of informatics professionals.
Dr. Newbold created an award-winning nursing informatics course in 1995, which she now conducts as the Nursing Informatics Boot Camp while teaching informatics across all levels of nursing education, from undergraduate students to Doctor of Nursing Practice candidates. She has also co-edited five books and authored numerous articles on informatics topics. Her influence extends internationally, as she was a keynote speaker at the first nursing informatics conferences held in Taiwan and Singapore and has provided informatics consulting in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia, and Taiwan.
Dr. Newbold is also the founder of CARING (Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing), one of the first organizations dedicated to advancing nursing informatics and fostering collaboration among professionals in the field. Under her leadership, CARING grew into a national organization, known as the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), that played a pivotal role in shaping nursing informatics as a recognized specialty.
A recognized leader in nursing education, Dr. Newbold was named Outstanding Nurse Educator of the Year by the Maryland Nurses Association. She also received an Excellence in Teaching Award from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and the HIT Men-HIT Women award for improving patient care through health information technology.
“Dr. Newbold’s unwavering commitment to the advancement of nursing informatics has transformed the way technology is leveraged in clinical practice, ultimately improving patient care and clinical efficiency,” said Dr. Barbara Redman, Chair of the Friends of the NLM.
