Friends of the National Library of Medicine Announces New Board Members

 

The Friends of the National Library of Medicine Board of Directors is pleased to welcome two new Directors, Peter L. Elkin MD, MACP, FACMI, FNYAM and Gwen Evans, MA, MS. 

Dr. Elkin and Ms. Evans bring deep knowledge of biomedical informatics and health sciences communications to our Board, and their extensive experience will be invaluable to the Friends of the NLM as we move forward with many new and strategic initiatives,” said Glen P. Campbell, Chair of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine. 

 

Peter Elkin serves as the UB Distinguished Professor and Chair of the UB Department of Biomedical Informatics. Dr. Elkin has published over 200 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He received his Bachelors of Science from Union College and his M.D. from New York Medical College. He did his NIH/NLM sponsored fellowship in Medical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Elkin has been working in Biomedical Informatics since 1981 and has been actively researching health big data science since 1987. Dr. Elkin is a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. He was awarded the Mayo Department of Medicine’s Laureate Award for 2005. Dr. Elkin is the index recipient of the Homer R. Warner award for outstanding contribution to the field of Medical Informatics. Dr. Elkin is an internationally renowned expert in knowledge representation, ontology, natural language processing and health IT standards. Dr. Elkin in 2018 received the Team Science Award from the National Center for Advancement of Translational Sciences and was elected an inaugural fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association for Clinical Informatics excellence and has been elected to the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. He serves on the NCATS Informatics Quality Metrics Committee. He publishes the Springer series Textbook on Ontology, Terminology and Terminological Systems.

 

Gwen Evans serves as Vice President of Global Library Relations at Elsevier where she leads multi-stakeholder engagement efforts, including exploring the role of the library in the research process, research data management, patron education, and digital preservation. Evans was previously the Executive Director of OhioLINK, Ohio’s academic library consortium and state agency under the Ohio Department of Higher Education. Her leadership at OhioLINK, helped deliver the creation of a statewide library-led initiative for affordable textbooks, focusing on a hybrid approach of supporting Open Educational Resources; library resources as no-cost-to-students textbook alternatives; and groundbreaking statewide price agreements with major commercial textbook publishers. As Chair of the OhioLINK Digital Resource Management Committee, Evans spearheaded the successful nominations for the Digital Resource Commons to receive the American Libraries Association’s Office for Information Technology Policy Cutting Edge Technology in Library Services Award, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant. Evans has more than twenty years of experience working in libraries, including as an associate professor of library information and emerging technologies at Bowling Green State University, the John Crerar Science Library at the University of Chicago, Mt. Holyoke College Library and Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. She has extensive experience with library technology, including institutional repositories, journal and e-book platforms, and integrated library systems.

46 Task Force Members Will Convene for the First Time on Friday, May 14

Today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced the co-chairs and formal launch of its Scientific Integrity Task Force.

Convening for the first time on Friday, May 14, the 46-member Task Force – including 44 from across the federal government and two leaders from OSTP – will begin its work in responding to President Biden’s call to action to strengthen federal science in his Memorandum on Restoring Trust in Government Through Scientific Integrity and Evidence-Based Policymaking.
